Back to School - End of Summer

It’s hard to believe that we're already in the final days of August. Summer has flown by and children are headed back to school.

In Chinese medicine Yin and Yang are essentially an expression of the duality of time. Yang is for the day and reaches its peak at midday, then the yin within it gradually unfolds and manifests. Summer is the most Yang time of the seasons.

Children are believed to possess pure Yang energy. Free-spiritedness and robust energy are typical of children and as summer draws to a close and we begin to think about back to school plans, children may become worried or concerned about being in a new school, a new class, or have anxiety about starting school for the first time.

Think about adjusting your schedule to make the transition of the back to school routine a smoother one. For those children starting a new school, try to arrange a visit before school begins and check if the school has a ‘buddy’ system for pairing a newcomer with another student. Transition back to a regular sleep schedule – begin about a week to two weeks prior to the first day of classes to get ready for the school routine.

The key to staying healthy is to get adequate amounts of sleep, regular exercise, take a good quality multi-strain probiotic and to eat healthy balanced meals and snacks. This season is a great time to add healthy snacks and lunches to the brown bag or lunch box. Be sure to include lots of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables.
