April is Sarcoidosis Awareness Month, a time to bring visibility to a condition that is often misunderstood, frequently overlooked, and deeply impactful for those living with it.
Today, it is estimated that 175,000 people in the United States have sarcoidosis, with approximately 1.2 million individuals affected worldwide. Despite advances in medical research, sarcoidosis remains difficult to diagnose, has limited treatment options, and currently has no known cure.
And yet, there is hope.
What is Sarcoidosis?
Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory condition characterized by the formation of granulomas, tiny clusters of immune cells—that can develop in different organs.
Most commonly affected:
- Lungs
- Lymph nodes
- Skin
- Eyes
But sarcoidosis can impact any organ system, which is part of what makes it so complex and often challenging to diagnose.
Symptoms can vary widely and may include:
- Persistent cough or shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Skin rashes or lesions
- Eye irritation or vision issues
- Joint pain
Because these symptoms overlap with many other conditions, individuals often spend months—or even years—searching for answers.
Why Awareness Matters
Sarcoidosis is not rare, but it is frequently under-recognized.
Many patients are told:
- “Everything looks normal”
- “It’s just stress”
- “Let’s wait and see”
- “Could be Bronchitis”
Meanwhile, inflammation continues beneath the surface.
Awareness matters because:
- Early recognition can lead to earlier intervention
- Patients deserve to feel seen, heard, and supported
- More awareness drives research, funding, and better treatment options
My Personal Perspective as a Physician and Patient
This is not just something I treat—it’s something I personally understand.
I have been diagnosed with sarcoidosis.
And while that diagnosis can feel overwhelming at first, I want to share something important:
It is possible to live well with sarcoidosis.
Through an integrative approach, including Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, and lifestyle support, the condition is well managed, and I continue to feel strong, energized, and aligned in my health.
This perspective allows me to support my patients not just clinically, but empathetically and authentically.
An Integrative Approach: Supporting the Whole Person
While conventional medicine plays an important role, particularly in managing inflammation—many patients are left asking:
What else can I do to support my body?
This is where integrative care becomes powerful.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and functional medicine perspective, we focus on:
- Supporting the body’s regulatory systems
- Addressing underlying patterns of imbalance
- Reducing systemic inflammation
- Strengthening overall vitality and resilience
Approaches may include:
- Acupuncture to support immune modulation and reduce inflammation
- Herbal medicine tailored to the individual
- Nutritional and lifestyle strategies
- Stress regulation and nervous system support
The goal is not just symptom management, but helping the body function more optimally as a whole.
A Message to Those Living with Sarcoidosis
If you’ve been diagnosed, or suspect something deeper is going on, please hear this:
You are not alone.
You are not imagining your symptoms.
And you are not without options.
Even in conditions where there is no “cure,” there is still a path forward, one that focuses on improving quality of life, supporting your body, and helping you feel like yourself again.
